Cortez, Colorado

Located in the Southwest corner of Colorado, Cortez is placed between glorious deserts and majestic mountains.

Cortez serves as your base for visiting the incomparable cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park and its neighbor, the Ute Tribal Park. Here, in the archaeological heartland of the United States, vast cultural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities await your discovery: Hovenweep, Canyon of the Ancients, Crow Canyon, the Anasazi Heritage Center to name a few. Within a few minutes drive, you can be hiking or fishing or enjoying incredible fall colors in the nearby mountains.

The Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to visit our friendly, small town for a vacation experience like no other.

Montezuma County lies in the far southwest corner of the State of Colorado, just 38 miles from the only place where four states meet; Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

This point is also where two Native American nations come together: the Navajo and the Ute Mountain Ute.

Within 20 minutes of the County Seat of Cortez, residents can enjoy the mountains or the desert. Montezuma County’s natural assets create an enjoyable way of life for those who live here, as well as oil and gas deposits. Just ten miles from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, Montezuma County is the archeological center of the US.

The city of Cortez is the county seat, with the Town of Dolores, the Town of Mancos, and the Town of Towaoc as additional centers.
